Ok, it's really my wife who is breaking this news to me, but I'm sharing it. It's a real shame too! One of my favorite races the last few years has been the Nike 'Run Hit Wonder'. Chicago has been one of only three or four select cities every year they have done it. There are some fun bands playing along the course, and a big concert by a headline band at the end. It's always been on a weeknight during the late summer when they take over the south end of Grant Park. Nike has done it a couple different ways, offering a 5 and 10k the first two years, or last year just a five miler (if I remember right). Anyway, not this year. Nike is not going to put the race on here this year. My wife heard from a Nike rep they are still going to do it in one or two other cities (including LA), but not Chi-town. Bummer. I just hope that isn't a foreshadowing of the US Olympic committee decision between Chicago and LA.
Oh well, there are still plenty of fun races on the calendar in Chicago. I've got a couple races on the schedule the next couple weeks. This weekend is the Cary half marathon. I've never done it before, but I hear it's really challenging (hilly) and fun. That should be perfect for the Boston marathon training. Next weekend, of course, is the Shamrock Shuffle 8k. I am working that morning until 9:30, which is the time the race starts, but I plan to jog over right after work and jump in the back. The post-race party and concert is worth the effort, and I wouldn't feel right about going to the party if I didn't run. I'm planning a 20 miler the day before, so there will be no land speed records on that day anyway-just fun.
My boss asked me today why they have the Shamrock Shuffle the week after St. Patrick's day. Good question. I don't have the answer, but next time I see Carey Pinkowski, I'll ask and get back to you.
Hey, how about this spring arrival! Today I feel like I was transported back to the end of January, when I was running in Miami! I realize it won't last, but it is fun, and it will eventually be here to stay! The forecast calls for a return to the 30's by the weekend, which should be perfect for the Cary race. I hear that the weather is traditionally bad for that race, and no matter what direction you run, the wind is in your face! We'll see.
Tomorrow I'm trying out a new trail that I'm excited about. It's a forest preserve path starting at Devon and Caldwell. I'm planning a ten miler with 27 time Boston runner Mark Buciak. He's run them consecutively! I have been planning on picking his brain for some info for this space, and tomorrow should be a good opportunity.
So I'll be back with you sometime in the next couple days with that, and much more 'breaking news'! Til then see you on the paths!
