With my final 'long run' finished before the marathon next week, it's time to try to relax and try to rest as much as possible. More on that later, but I wanted to mention a couple things that have been going on.
First, here is the picture of the ABC-7 winning media team from the 'Hustle up the Hancock'. From right to left, it's Ben, Karen, Dan, myself, and Gina from the lung association. My lack of computer skills should be evident here, because I couldn't figure out how to transfer the picture into this space from email, so I took a photo of it off the computer screen to load it here. Anyway, the event was a lot of fun, and friendly competition with our friends at the other television stations. The point of it, though, is to draw as much attention as possible to the lung association and their mission to help people breath easier. To that end, I am honored to help them with their marathon training/fundraising team. They are getting together a fundraising team to run the LaSalle Bank Chicago marathon in October. The first meeting will be Tuesday, April 17th at 7pm at Trinity bar on Halsted just south of Diversey. I will be there to share some of my experiences from the Boston marathon a day earlier. More importantly, the folks from CARA will be there to talk about the training program they will run to help people get ready to run the race. Stop by and say hello if you get a chance. I'll probably be hobbling, so you can make fun of me if you like!
Hey, one of my favorite races of the year, as I've mentioned in the past, is the Soldier Field 10 miler that ends on the field the Sunday before Memorial day. They expanded the field this year to more than 5,000. Unfortunately, it just filled up this week already! The folks at Fleet Feet sports do a great job with the race, and I guess word-of-mouth travelled quickly this year. You do, however, have a chance to still run it. I'm told the store still has about 60 entries they have reserved for charity. Check with Fleet Feet for more info.
That also brings to mind the marathon. They have also expanded the field this year to 45,000, but are nearing capacity. I got an email from my friends at the marathon this week, and they say it will likely close pretty soon, probably within the next couple weeks. So get your entries in soon. Of course, the charity entries will also be available for the marathon, and the one I'd recommend is the one I mentioned above. How about running for the Lung Association?!
I promise you it will be fun. Marathon training is always fun, at least when you get to the stage in your training that I am at right now: one week out and seriously tapering! Anyway, it's running and baseball this week. The Cubs home opener is on Monday, and my first visit to Fenway Park will be Sunday before the marathon. Needless to say, I'm looking forward to it. I plan to write about it quite a bit in this space , and I'll try to get my wife to take a few pictures!
I'll see you on the path this week, and stop by Trinity next week if you get a chance.
