My friend Tom called it one of the four best days of the year to run. I'd like to know the other three! He was talking about Saturday. But Sunday, the next day may have been even better. Fall, in all it's glorious colors, was on full display this weekend. The temperature was just about perfect, and the surroundings were awe-inspiring. These were the days we may want to remember in a couple months when we may be trudging through slush, and trying to keep our balance on icy roads.
One of my favorite things about running is that I do it outside, in the elements. Rain, sleet or snow. Below freezing or above 90. We adjust our clothing and effort for the weather, but the conditions don't keep us from running..
Some days, when the weather is miserable, non-runners question our judgement, or sanity. But this weekend was not one of those times. We ran on familiar ground, the Prairie path, starting in Elmhurst and headed west. It was crowded! We immediately appreciated the burst of colors from the leaves on themany trees changing colors into brilliant oranges, reds, and browns.
Fall is my favorite time to run. It brings memories of Cross Country seasons and running races through fallen leaves on hilly golf courses and parks. There was plenty of that going on this weekend for high school teams which had regional meets Saturday.
It's also marathon season. Chicago was blessed with great weather earlier this month. Naperville is two weeks away. New York is in less than a week. It's a great time to be a runner!
As we all know, Mother Nature is a fickle lady. We can't really count of her to provide great conditions for whatever race we may be targetting. I've come to accept that it's just one of those things you can't control, so it's not worth worrying about.
But when She provides us with ideal running conditions like over the weekend, it's incumbant on runners to take advantage, get out and enjoy it!
So that's what I did. Saturday we planned our long run on the Prairie path. Sunday, I was a little more pressed for time, and I planned to just run from home. But when I stepped outside, I realized that I had to go back to the path, and take my camera. We just don't get many days as enjoyable as this.
Hope you got to enjoy some time on the run in the great weather!
See you on the roads.............
